Books Meme!

Gakked from aerye.

The book I am reading: I started 'Ysabel' by Guy Gavriel Kay this week. Interesting premise, and I like the main character, but I'm still waiting for it to really grab me.

The book I am writing: Pfft. I'm not. For two reasons. One, I'm not interested in getting published. I'd rather just post my work on-line. Second, I am the very soul of brevity. BREVITY! The longest fic I ever wrote was 36k, and that was the FIRST fic I ever wrote. As I got better, I got shorter. I believe over half of my body of work consists of pieces < 300 words.

The book I love most: Oh. Tough question. Very, very tough. But if we're going with the criteria of 'read the most times', that would be 'The Sheepfarmer's Daughter' by Elizabeth Moon. That book is my comfort read - I've read 3 copies into the grave.

The last book I received as a gift: People give me gift cards to bookstores, and let me buy my own. Since I was six or so. Wait, wait. *checks the bookshelves* Ah-ha! A girlfriend gave me 'Dagger: on Butch Women' edited by Lily Burana, Roxxie, and Linnea Due about 15 years ago. A good read, and not something I would have picked up for myself.

The last book I gave as a gift: I would never presume to gift someone a book. However, I often LEND books to people, and sometimes they don't come back. Does that count? If so, I think 'Guilty Pleasures' by Laurell K. Hamilton would be the most recently MIA.

The nearest book on my desk: My bookshelves aren't near my desk. *digs under stacks of paper, and mail, and random-ass stuff* Oh! 'The Curse of Chalion' by Lois McMaster Bujold! I've been LOOKING for that! Since I used it while researching my *coughs* 2009 *coughs* yuletide fic. This gives you some idea of the state of my desk.

Now back to my regularly scheduled attempt to finish this due South Quest story. If I finish a rough draft by Saturday night, I've promised myself a ticket to the Seattle Comicon on Sunday!

"Ysabel" never quite grabbed me, either. I'm reading "Under Heaven" now (GGK's latest book) and it seems he's gone back to his earlier, more epic and adult style, which I like better. I like "Under Heaven", although I'm getting a bit annoyed with the fascination with expensive and sophisticated prostitutes. Sure, there are various interesting female characters, but it's just always there in the background, with the men getting a girl for the night (who is always exquisitely graceful and attuned to his needs, etc).

Yeah, I've stuck Ysabel back on the shelf for now and I'm trying 'The Stranger' by Max Frein, which grabbed me from the first page.

Maybe I'll go back to checking his stuff out of the library. I've found, since I started getting heavily into fanfic, that I really resent shelling out money for books that aren't fantastic.

I... am embarrassed to say that I not only haven't read any of these books, I don't even recognize the titles. Literary fail. :(

*grins* Nah, you're probably way too classy for my trashy literary tastes.

Oh man, that Quest story is a MESS. I've heard back from one of three betas. The other two are still o_O. So, it's in the works, but no ETA yet.
