Round 1 of Yuletide Recs

Before the Yuletide Madness Collection opens, I thought I'd start everyone off with a baker's dozen recs of some of the truly amazing stories I've read and enjoyed so far.

TV - Blacklist, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, House of Cards, Vikings

Splendid (1295 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: The Blacklist (TV)
Rating: Mature
Warnings: Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
Relationships: Dembe/Raymond Reddington
Characters: Dembe Zuma, Raymond Reddington
Additional Tags: Yuletide, Chromatic Yuletide, Yuletide Treat
Summary:

Because of Red, this is how Dembe lives.

Bookmarker's Notes:

The author delicately shows the relationship between Reddington and Dembe, with its terrible inherent power differential, growing into a strong and beautiful meeting of equals.

The Ladies Book Club of the Ninety-Ninth Precinct (2335 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Brooklyn Nine-Nine (TV)
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Rosa Diaz, Amy Santiago, Jake Peralta
Additional Tags: Misses Clause Challenge
Summary:

The rules of the book club are as follows:

1. Book club is called book club. If you have some other stupid name for it, don't say it out loud.
2. No inviting boys.
3. No inviting Gina. She only reads Twilight.
4. No graphic violence (in books, or at meetings).
5. Nothing approximating a romance novel.
6. No setting disagreeable selections on fire.

Bookmarker's Notes:

The author has nailed Rosa and Amy's voices. I love the fact that both of them are outcasts, in their own way, because they are too passionate about the things that matter to them. In this story, both women respect each other's boundaries and find a common ground in a weekly book club. Read it now!

AM/PM (2850 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: House of Cards (US TV)
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Claire Underwood, Francis Underwood, Edward Meechum, Garrett Walker
Additional Tags: AU, Misses Clause Challenge, Yuletide
Summary:

"Congratulations, Ms. Underwood. By this time tomorrow, you will be the first woman president of the United States of America."

Bookmarker's Notes:

The tone, voice, and cleverness of this piece fit perfectly into canon - if only Claire, rather than Francis, were the VP. Walker never had a chance.

the still and silent sea (1228 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Vikings (TV)
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Lagertha (Vikings), Bjorn (Vikings)
Summary:

It is the still and silent sea that drowns a man.
-- Old Norse proverb

Bookmarker's Notes:

This is Lagertha's story. It immerses the reader fully in her mind-set and culture, without ever leaving you scrambling for a translation. One unique thing about Lagertha is that she is such a powerful character in both the male and female understandings of the word, and the author showcases that beautifully.

Open your heart to what the gods have to say (2073 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Vikings (TV)
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Athelstan/Lagertha/Ragnar Lothbrok
Characters: Athelstan (Vikings), Ragnar Lothbrok, Lagertha (Vikings)
Additional Tags: OT3, Voyeurism, Masturbation, Seduction, First Time, Yuleporn, Threesome - F/M/M, Yuletide, Religious Content
Summary:

Ragnar goes to Lagertha one night. She is not alone.

Bookmarker's Notes:

When canon invites you to a threesome, it's down-right churlish not to accept. The author captures Lagertha, Ragnar, and Athelstan's voices perfectly. Their choice to set the story post-canon gives it a bitter-sweet feel that is burnt away by the sheer heat of the interactions. There is witty banter, Athelstan grappling with the question of who he was and who he wants to be, gorgeous imagery, and explicit consent by all parties. Also, did I mention the hot sex? Go read it!

Movies - Aliens, Predator, Guardians of the Galaxy

A Grand Hunt (5346 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Aliens (1986), Alien Series, Alien vs Predator (2004), Aliens vs Predators Series - Various Authors, Predator Series
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: Graphic Depictions Of Violence
Characters: Original Alien Character(s), Rebecca 'Newt' Jorden, Ellen Ripley, Dwayne Hicks, Jenette Vasquez, Carter Burke, Ensemble, Bishop (Aliens), William Gorman
Additional Tags: Alternate Universe - Canon Divergence, Crossover, Minor Character Death, Mild Gore, Mild Language, Yuletide, Misses Clause Challenge
Summary:

The sector that had a hoard of Hard Meat eggs was being encroached by the expansion of the Soft Meat herds. SpearKiller goes to see what damage has been done, and reacts accordingly.

Bookmarker's Notes:

This is an amazing Alien/Predator AU. What if a wily old Predator investigated the colony where Newt was hiding out, before the marines arrived? I'm a huge fan of any story that makes alien cultures come to life, and this author does a bang-up job of it.

And This Is How the World Ends (1081 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Guardians of the Galaxy (Movies)
Rating: Mature
Warnings: Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
Relationships: Gamora/Nebula (Marvel)
Characters: Gamora (Marvel), Nebula (Marvel)
Additional Tags: Pre-Canon, Dark, Character Study, Origin Story, Angst, Misses Clause Challenge, First Time, Sexual Content
Summary:

On her homeworld — her real homeworld, the one that will stay locked and buried inside her chest — there was a saying that the universe will end painted in the scorching blood of the gods, burnt out of existence by the wrath of the small and the oppressed who will have no more of their rule.

As her tiny body quakes in the ruins of her people, her parents’ twisted bodies behind her and Thanos’ first task ahead, she whispers the words to herself over and over, in a voice so low even the gods cannot hear.

Bookmarker's Notes:

Dark, passionate, and brilliant. The perfect explanation of why, out of all their sisters, Nebula hated Gamora the least.

Pining for You (1602 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Guardians of the Galaxy (Movies)
Rating: Mature
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Groot/Rocket Raccoon
Additional Tags: Interspecies Sex, Bondage, Yuletide Treat
Summary:

“Did you just pollinate on me?” Rocket demanded

“I am Groot” Groot said, which, fine. Rocket guessed he had also pollinated on Groot.

Bookmarker's Notes:

The author has some form of unearthly magic. First, they write perfect Rocket voice. Tricky, but not impossible. Then, they write compelling Groot dialogue. I don't understand how, they just did. Finally, they wrote a Groot/Rocket sex scene that is oddly (and I do mean oddly) hot. IDEK. The laws of the universe have been bent to make this fic possible. Check it out, see if you agree.

Books - Star Trek: Rihannsu - Diane Duane, Watership Down - Richard Adams

this done, day comes up new (10125 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Star Trek: Rihannsu - Diane Duane
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Ael t'Rllaillieu/Aidoann t'Khnialmnae
Characters: Ael t'Rllaillieu, Leonard McCoy, Arrhae t'Llhweiir, t'Hrienteh, Romulan Commander, Aidoann t'Khnialmnae, Assorted Rihannsu
Summary:

Ael t'Rllaillieu and some of the women she has loved.

Bookmarker's Notes:

Xeno-anthropology geeks rejoice!

This isn't an easy read, but it is a brilliant addition to the canon of the Rihannsu novels. The author choreographed the intricate dance that occurs in the source material, between personal and impersonal, emic and etic, present and future, narrative and meta. Etymology, linguistics, and the heart and soul of the Empress are on display here, in all their glory.

Mixed Blessings (1179 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Watership Down - Richard Adams
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
Characters: Black Rabbit of Inlé
Additional Tags: Crueltide, Rabbit Mythology, Dark, Supernatural Elements, Yuletide Treat
Summary:

Every year, on a certain night in early June, the Black Rabbit of Inlé returns to Sandleford.

Bookmarker's Notes:

The Black Rabbit of Inlé visits a housing complex built over the remains of a massacred warren. It is dark, lyrical, and menacing. This story made me shiver. It also captured the sense that this being is neither good nor evil - just powerful, dangerous, and necessary.

Other Media - Greek Prose Composition, Sumerian Mythology, Unusual Dragon Hoards - iguanamouth

Αἱ ἡμεραι ὑπο κυνα ἐτελευτησαν, or: Exercise 66 (6090 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Greek Prose Composition - M. A. North & A. E. Hillard
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
Summary:

ὠ παλαι, ὠ παλαι
ἐν τινι κοσμω ἐκτοπωτατω...

(story in English. Excuse the lack of iota subscripts above.)

Bookmarker's Notes:

Bizarre and awesome. It's ancient Greek literature turned into a 1950's sci-fi movie, including Nicias as our heroine's rocking rock-thing co-pilot, Agamemnon, Alcibiades, a fuckton of Persians, and a chorus comprised of robots. What's not to like?

Inanna versus the Mountain (1368 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Sumerian Mythology
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
Characters: Inanna | Ishtar, Jadbalja (a lion), Sky Father An
Additional Tags: Misses Clause Challenge, Yuletide Treat, Yuletide 2014, Dark Agenda
Summary:

Inanna went out for a hike with her badass, mofo lion, Jadbalja, cuz lions need exercise and Inanna needed to sweat out a little of the night before.

That's how she saw the mountain.

That's how she got disrespected.

Inanna did not put up with disrespect.

Bookmarker's Notes:

The rhythms and refrains of this story make it feel like a piece of oral story-telling. One in which Inanna is a BAMF, and you'd best not forget it!

What Is Mine Is Not Yours (4721 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Unusual Dragon Hoards - iguanamouth
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Hoard of Junk Food Dragon, Hoard of Knives Dragon, Hoard of Kittens Dragon, Hoard of Pastries Dragon, Hoard of Cats Dragon
Additional Tags: Dragon Hoards, Territorialism, Shapeshifting, Illusions, Dragonish Culture, Questionably Clever Naming Scheme, Humor, Worldbuilding, Dragons Are Not Nice, Dragon Gossip, All Dragons Know Each Other, Dragons, Kittens, Yuletide 2014
Summary:

Necco is a small, struggling dragon, who can barely keep his hoard together, in a big town full of much more powerful, temperamental dragons. Some days, it's all he can do to stay alive.

Bookmarker's Notes:

The author took the 'Unusual Dragon Hoards' artwork and built an entire draconic world that exists just a side-step away from our own. Turf wars, shapeshifting and shady deals, mates with compatible hoards, and the pluckiest little protagonist you've ever cheered for. Enjoy!
