Rating: PG
Length: 400 words
Author's Notes: First place winner in the spnland 'Water' short writing challenge.

Summary: Sammy normally spends the day of a move making Dean's life hell. Today, he's just reading.

The Witch of Lake County turned out to be sixteen year-old girl with a bad attitude who’d gotten into her dearly departed nana’s occult library. The little bitch had been taking out every hot chick at Deerfield High School with a nasty combination of disfiguring boils and STD’s that had kept Dean celibate for the first three weeks of his junior year.

Dad put the fear of Winchester in her and they burned all the occult books. All but one. When Sammy showed that one to Dad, he’d laughed and told the kid to keep it.

Dean was a little worried about that book messing with Sammy’s head, but if Dad set it up as a diversionary tactic, it sure worked. Instead of Sammy’s usual day-long rant whenever they moved, he'd spent the last four hours perfectly quiet in the back seat, reading.

“Dean, you’re an Aquarius,” Sammy suddenly announced.

“Yeah?” Dean agreed warily.

“According to this book, Aquarians have strong and attractive personalities. There are two types – the first is shy, gentle, and patient. The second is an exuberant, lively exhibitionist who hides the depths of his character by acting like a jerk.”

“It does not say that!” Dean protested.

“I’m interpreting,” Sammy fired back. “It also says Aquarians are loyal and honest.”

Dean barked out a laugh. Dad cleared his throat and rubbed his lips before returning his attention to the road to pass an eighteen-wheeler.

“Well, you’re loyal,” said Sam doubtfully. “And you’re honest with us, anyway.”

“Sammy, you do realize that astrology isn’t real witchcraft, right? It’s just a load of crap.”

“Yeah ... the book also says Aquarians are intelligent and have good taste in music, so it must be bogus.”

Dean reached back and whacked Sammy’s knee. Sammy yelped, grabbed Dean’s hand, and tried to apply a wrist lock.

“Boys,” Dad said, before it could escalate into a full-on car battle. They settled down, and for the next few miles there was nothing but the soft strains of The Who.

“I’m a Taurus,” Sammy said eventually, quieter than before. Dean turned and hung half-way over the seat, listening. “Taurans and Aquarians are both strong-willed, so they come into conflict a lot. But if they decide to work together, nothing and nobody can come between them.”

“Well, that’s a relief,” Dean said, voice thick with sarcasm. The funny thing was; he meant it.

Jeez, you're kicking ass over at spnland! Go keerawa, go!

This was so amazing. I'm not a big believer in astrology, as far as horoscopes, but from the descriptions of Aries, I'm one through and through. And Dean is such an Aquarius! Sam makes a great Taurus too. And I love that Dean's sarcastic and honest at the same time.

Great job!

Spnland is a bit of a small pond, but I'm happy with it! Poor Sam, sitting there reading, trying to make sense of his life through this new lens. Dean's quite the Aquarius. And he expresses real emotions in his own way. Sam gets it.

Thanks, tifaching! (I can't recall - do you prefer Ti, or Tif, for a nickname?)

Loved this. Loved the fact that Dean was celibate for the first three weeks of junior year. Loved that Dad gave Sam the book. Loved Dean's over the seat slap and Dad's "Boys." Mostly, I love that even Astrology believes in the boys.

Thank you, saberivojo! I'm glad you liked Dean's slap. WE ALL BELIEVE IN THEM!!!

I really enjoyed reading this! It's wonderful every time you get to see a glimpse of the boys when John is around. I think the dynamic really came through here. :)

Thanks! It's interesting that, although John's driving, the boys seem very focused on each other.

Oh, I love this! Cranky celibate Dean, Sam all in the grip of Learning Something--awesome.

Cranky celibate Dean
Now we know why he has such a grudge against witches! And I'm glad that came across about Sam. Thanks for the comment, embroiderama!

Thank you, briggitt, I'm glad you liked it!

Nice. So fitting with what we know happens between them. I also find it insightful writing that instead of Sam listing what it means for him to be a Taruus, instead he focused on what his sign meant in relation to Dean's sign. That is just so Sammy.

And Dean, brushing it off, but really taking it to heart. You're good.

I am truly delighted that you picked up on that. Thank you!

Love this! You do write amazing stories that capture the family dynamics so well. Congrats on the win...again. ;) I've been sadly absent from our team over the last week (RL and all that) so apologies for not having read this before!

Thank you, dragonlit! Here, drop in and play People Bingo. Your team needs you!

This was such a sweet and well-written little piece! I love how you capture the family so well in so few words, and that you show us a calm and laid-back moment where everybody's getting along. Sammy's little armchair analysis of astrology was really funny (especially this bit: "The second is an exuberant, lively exhibitionist who hides the depths of his character by acting like a jerk”. Heh. <3). And the end, about Sam and Dean making a great team, totally put an even bigger smile on my face and pulled at my heart. :D
Apr. 17th, 2011 06:10 pm (UTC)
That is exactly the reaction I was hoping for! For me, the appeal of this show, right from the start, has been the bond between Sam and Dean. Thanks so much, applegeuse!

"sir, I don't disagree on any particular point."
And John is just biting his tongue up there, isn't he!

I do LIKE the Zoe quote, but I'm not sure how it applies here ...
John certainly is! Thanks, randomstasis!
