Rec: A Monster By Any Other Name

Here are the rules of FREAC Camp:

* Do whatever the guards say, as soon as they say it, or they'll hurt you.
* Never show that you're angry, or afraid, or they'll hurt you worse.
* Never show you care about something or someone, or they'll take it away.
* Every day, when you wake up, think, 'today will be the worst day of my life.' That way you won't be surprised.
* Don't hope. Death is the only way out.
* Whatever happens, remember, you're a monster. You deserve it.

This is an absolutely stunning Supernatural AU. Read it even if you've never seen the show. In it, the world became aware of the supernatural threat back in the 80's, and created a special government agency to research and subdue supernatural creatures. Hunters bring monsters to FREAC Camp to be studied, experimented on, and dissected. One of them is a five-year-old boy, 88UI6703. He calls himself Sam.

This is a dark tale, not a kink fic. It takes a death camp and the torture, mutilation, sexual abuse, and brain-washing of it's inhabitants very seriously indeed. Some of the chapters were extremely difficult to read. 'A Monster By Any Other Name' shows how the human spirit can bend and twist to survive in the most terrible circumstances. And it's also a love story.

The first book of the trilogy was completed several months ago, and the authors have just started in on Book 2, which promises to be somewhat lighter. It's technically a WIP, but I think of it more as a serial fic, with chapters published every Friday without fail.

Read A Monster By Any Other Name. Read it. Read it. Read it. You won't be sorry.

Wait, what, we're writing a trilogy? *thinks about it* *headdesk* I suppose we are.

You are absolutely writing a trilogy! 'Part One' was a book unto itself. I'm glad the rec meets with both authors' approval!
