My Yuletide Gifts

This year I was lucky enough to receive three exceptional gift-fics (THREE!) in two book fandoms: 'Kushiel's' Legacy' and 'This Alien Shore'. One each of gen, het, and femme-slash.

we are the masks we choose to wear (1094 words) by Anonymous
Fandom: This Alien Shore - C. S. Friedman
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Jamisia, Raven, Derik, Verina, Zusu, Katlyn, Kio Masada
Summary:

They're all still learning what it means to be at peace.

'This Alien Shore' by C.S. Friedman, for those of you who haven't read it, is a brilliant and rather obscure sci-fi novel that blends cyberpunk with action, psychological drama, and some absolutely unique complex world-building. It's the smallest of small fandoms, because my gift is the very first in the AO3 for this book!

For anyone who has read the book, you absolutely MUST read this fic. The author brings a sense of completeness and peace to the narrators. It's the epilogue that the canon needed, and never received, and incorporates many of the unique aspects of Guerran culture that I found most fascinating in the original text.

i've come to test the timber of my heart (1077 words) by Anonymous
Fandom: Kushiel's Legacy - Jacqueline Carey
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Phedre no Delaunay/Joscelin Verreuil, Phedre no Delaunay/Imriel de la Courcel (implied)
Characters: Phedre no Delaunay, Joscelin Verreuil, Imriel de la Courcel
Summary:

I have always resolved to allow Imriel to make his own choices, but this was different. It was not his own choice if I goaded him into taking the opportunity presented to him.

I requested some problematically incestuous Phedre/Imriel, and mmmmm, my author delivered. I particularly like the delicate and respectful way she handled Phedre's relationship with Joscelin.

A Pain That I'm Used To (1422 words) by Anonymous
Fandom: Kushiel's Legacy - Jacqueline Carey
Rating: Mature
Warning: Author Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings, No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Phedre no Delaunay/Melisande Shahrizai
Characters: Melisande Shahrizai
Summary:

A letter from Melisande to Joscelin Verreuil, thankfully, never sent.

Melisande is a fabulous character. The combination of love and bitterness in this letter is striking, and it made me shiver.
