2014 Dear Yuletide Writer Letter

This year for Yuletide I requested 5 fandoms: Vikings (TV), The Blacklist (TV), Honor Harrington series - David Webber, Jeremiah (TV), and Bluestone 42 (TV).

I would be delighted if you wrote me something that fits the Chromatic Yuletide or Misses Claus challenges for any of my fandoms, and I'm open for a Two for One cross-over or Crueltide story in some of my fandoms. I'm mostly offering gen prompts this year, but I'm a fan of porn for yuletide, so Yuleporn is also a go!

Optional details are optional, and I know I'll love anything you write me in any of these fandoms, but if you'd like some further information on how to rock my world for yuletide, here are some ideas...

Vikings (the best show on TV): Ragnar Lothbrok, Lagertha, Floki, Athelstan
I love this show for the view it offers into Viking culture, the cleverness and competency of its characters, and the way it plays with the tensions of loyalty, ambition, and betrayal. The tight, intricate plots! The flashes of mysticism! The unreliable narrators! The strong female characters!

I'll love anything you write me here, but here are a few story ideas:
* A Floki-POV story, with his spiritual, atypical brain in all its glory.
* Athelstan trying to resolve the dissonance he feels, caught between two cultures, faiths, and identities.
* Ragnar/Lagertha/Athelstan, and a hard-won peace.
* Separated from canon by time and/or distance, the canonical events become part of legend.

The Blacklist (POC and crazy cross-overs): Raymond Reddington, Meera Malik (Reddington is a must; I would be happy with Meera, Aram, Dembe, Luli, or Mr. Kaplan as other main characters, but listing them all would have made me impossible to match)
I love this show because its plots depend on all its characters being intelligent and competent. BAMFs everywhere! I love the fact that women, characters of color, and queer characters are treated with respect, as important characters in their own right, and have agency. Reddington's strong and unconventional moral code fascinates me, as does the way he earns the loyalty of his people.

I like Elizabeth Keen, but canon is her story - I'm looking for something different, if possible. I'm not especially interested in a Liz/Red story, but it doesn't completely squick me, if you want it somewhere in the background. I would love a gen story, whether case fic, backstory, or something else. A story that placed Agent Malik, Dembe, Luli, Aram or Mr. Kaplan front and center would be fantastic. Feel free to go BLACK dark with fic in this fandom, if you like, but I'd want at least a glimmer of hope or a search for redemption.

And here's an off the wall suggestion. I think Blacklist would make a FANTASTIC AU, cross-over or fusion with sci-fi, dystopias,or magical realism stories that feature political intrigue, powerful governments, and the opposition or resistance to them. Perhaps Reddington is subverting the Queen's interests in Gaiman's 'A Study in Emerald'? Feeding the FBI information about the aliens in 'V'? A powerful figure in an America trying to restore itself after the zombie apocalypse? A fixer for the vampire overlords? Quietly utilizing the talents of the genetically enhanced children of 'Dark Angel'? The possibilities are endless!

Honor Harrington verse (the anthropology geek edition): any characters, including OCs
The Honor Harrington books are amazing! Such sweeping tale of politics and warfare, the rise and fall of governments, world-building with and space-battles with technology that is actually plausible. Wow.

Webber is telling a grand tale; for Yuletide, I would like a small story that reveals something about his world. It could feature any of the nominated characters, or your own original characters. Show me something about tree-cat society, what its like to be gay on Grayson, or a winter holiday on Gryphon. Maybe Michelle Henke sharing a meal with friends, young princess Elizabeth's favorite bed-time story, Harkness in a cut-throat game of cards, or a family reunion when the San Martino POWs returned home. Dark-fic is certainly acceptable for this fandom, but I would like some hint of redemption or hope.

I'm a bit of an anthropology geek, so any cultural insights you might share would make me very happy!

Jeremiah (my love affair with Theo): Theo, Theo, Theo
Jeremiah shows us a post-apocalyptic society created by children. That's serious Lord of the Flies territory, and yet it remains hopeful, less a dystopia than a cloudy sky with hints of light breaking through. I like the essential idealism of the show.

I am fascinated by Theo. The woman is strong, charismatic, and ruthless. Theo gathered other children, resources, and power. She BUILT a town with its own system of law and commerce. She gained power, and lost it, and re-gained it. In her own way, she is a visionary, and I would love a story that explores that, and her perspective on the world.

Bluestone 42 (British black humor): Lynda Bird because its awesome to see a realistic woman in the military!
OK, I admit it - I started watching this show about a British bombs disposal unit in Afghanistan as research for a Sherlock story with John Watson serving in Afghanistan. But it is SO damn good. Funnier than MASH, darker, and more real. Within the first 15 minutes, I cared deeply about all the characters.

I don't much care if Nick and the Padre get it on or not, but aside from that, the field is wide-open. Here are a few story prompts, if you're looking for some:
* Zany misadventures around Christmas gifts shipped to them by friends and family back home.
* A new corporal arrives in camp who is a gifted scrounger. How does Faruq deal with the competition?
* Lieutenant Colonel Smith's actual first rule.
* The unit gets drunk and plays a game of 'Never Have I Ever'.
* The unit stays in a local village over-night. If you know or are willing to research Afghani culture, food, etc, I'd be thrilled.
* I love the way that class is addressed in the second season. I'd love to see an author look more into those dynamics.
* Dark-fic, such as Bird dealing with a sexual assault, Nick with PTSD, or a POW situation. Nick claimed he spent five years of boarding school five years of being done up the arse, five years of doing other people at the arse. It was a joke; and maybe there was something serious behind it. Black humor as a fucked-up way of dealing with Very Serious Issues appeals to me, and I can see these characters using it as a coping mechanism.

I'm thrilled about all of my requested fandoms. I threw some story ideas your way, but feel free to ignore them if they don't catch your interest. I'm sure I'll love whatever you write. Here are a few general ideas about my many likes and few dislikes.

General Likes
I'm a fan of plotty stories. I like it when interesting things happen, characters need to do something or figure something out. Even in a story where the sex or relationship is the main focus, I love having some kind of additional conflict, mystery or action going on, something that shows these characters have lives and outside interests. Characters being smart and competent really pleases me, and if some of those characters are women, queer, trans, or people of color, all the better!

I like tight POV's, where I can really get into the narrator's head.

I like angst and darkfic, up to and including deathfic. Now, don't feel that you have to go there - I like light, happy stories too! But if your Muse leads you somewhere dark, I'm delighted to go there with you. I like it when a character's dark side and flaws are intimately related to their best qualities. It's not that I enjoy the exploration of evil, per say. More that I'm fascinated by the search for love and redemption in even the darkest of circumstances.

Unreliable narrators are a particular thrill for me. I like original characters and outsider POVs, so feel free. I'm always interested in stories that reveal character backstory. I love stories about people who know and trust each other working together as a team.

One of my requests mentioned AU's, but you could write one for any of my fandoms. I really enjoy AUs, especially the 'alternate timeline' or 'hinge-point' variety, where a single different decision veers reality away from canon. World-building (or culture-building) is one of the things I love most about fan-fic, so feel free to play with that type of AU! I really enjoy the fan-constructed realities such as omegaverse or BDSM-verse, so if you wanted to transpose any of these fandoms into those settings, I'd be delighted to see the result.

General Dislikes
I'm not into crack!fic, including tentacles, wings, and transformation fic. I don't like kid fic, and pregnancy completely squicks me. Plots that depend on characters acting like idiots are irritating. Pure romantic fluff with no conflict or other plot doesn't generally work for me, and I'm not generally a fan of 'These characters are now pirates in the 1700's!' variety of AU.

Although I admire a well-crafted sentence, I'm not really into poetic or flowery language.

Hot Sex
I read and enjoy lots of G-PG fic, and my requests this year are mostly gen. But if you should be in the mood to write porn, yay! I like slash, het, and femme-slash. I'm a fan of intense relationships. People who love each other beyond all reason. Even if you're writing about a hook-up or business transaction, I want it to be in response to some deep need, not just a casual fling. Kink works for me, if you want to go there. You don't have to - one of the hottest stories I ever read never went past a purely vanilla first base. Passionate, nervous first-time kissing. Mmmmm.

My favorite kinks include dirty talk, voyeurism, masturbation, pain, bloodplay, marking, bondage, orgasm denial, and power-imbalances. *licks lips* Most importantly, though, it needs to be in-character, be about these two people, what they want and need. Kinks are all about trust. It doesn't need to be safe or sane, but I want it consensual. That said, the particular flavor of dub-con wherein a character is forced into something they desperately want, but could never reach out and take on their own sets me off like a fire-cracker. (*coughs* omega-verse). Mind control can be very very hot.

I'm not into fisting, golden showers, scat-play, clothing-fetishes, DS as a lifestyle, necrophilia, bestiality, or role-playing. But you could probably make me buy into any one of them, if you write it hard and hot enough. The one thing that seriously turns me off is fic where the character's kink is because of some childhood trauma, sexual assault, or anything like that. Pregnancy, male or female, is a hard no.

In Conclusion
To me, fanfic is all about getting a chance to explore characters in ways that the original source didn't allow. I love these characters, these worlds - show me something I didn't know about them, and that's the best present you can give me.

Your Eager Recipient,

- keerawa

Wait, wait--did I know that you watched Bluestone 42? How did I miss that? How do we not spend time talking about how much they need to just put Bird and Faruq in charge of EVERYTHING EVER?

I am disgruntled to find that I have missed the evidence that there are people I could be discussing this show with, is all.

I LOVE Bluestone 42! And nobody watches it in the US, atall, it seems.

If Bird and Faruq were in charge, the war would be over and everyone could just go home.

Also - you should write me treats for yuletide. Because there appears to not be ANY Bluestone 42 fic anywhere on the Internet, which is a clear violation of Rule 34, and needs to be remedied pronto.
