dS Snippet: Leashed

Fandom/Character: due South, Diefenbaker
Rating: PG
Length: 295 words
Challenge: ds_snippets Challenge #12: "Ownership", Diefenbaker theme
Spoilers: The Wild Bunch
Thanks to: My beta omphale23.

He says he doesn't own me, which is true. I don't own him, but he is owned. Collared by Duty and leashed by Law. Sometimes, at night, I imagine the wolf in him growling and snapping at his bonds.

One door, one man between me and freedom. If I'd been captured by Criminals, we'd escape in moments. But this is Animal Control, where dangerous animals are sent to die. On the tundra the only rule was survival, and we saved each other every day. Now we are in the city, Law has its teeth at my throat, and he will not save me. He wants to, I think. But his leash jerks him short.

He talks and talks. Under the words, I sense his fear that I've gone wild. I know I never stopped. I almost close my eyes, shut him out, but that would be cruel. He offers to stay, but I send him away.

He stands to leave. I scent my mate, and she is afraid. I try to tell him, to ask for help, but his head is full of stupid man-thoughts. Regrets, and Grief, and Memories. I sight her through the open door.

Stop this! He is deaf to me, blind to her.

Challenge! I lunge, slash, taste his blood. He doesn't fight back. Shocked says his scent, Betrayed say his eyes, but his lips say nothing as he closes the door and leaves me behind.

So, this is how it ends.

I circle three times, lie down, lick my own fur until my mouth tastes clean. I'm not angry. It's just his nature. Tonight he may whimper in his bed; not me. I am wild and I am proud. They may kill me tomorrow, but they will never own me.

I've been shaking my writer's compass lately, hoping for something other than Fraser angst. A little porn, some Vodou, maybe.

And what do I get? Dief Angst. *facepalm*

that was so wolfish! a different kind of take on Dief, because often he ends up seeming more doglike, so you forget that he's not supposed to be tame. I liked it a ton.

This Dief felt rather alien in my head, very far from a human perspective. I'm glad it worked for you.

very nice. i like the contempt of the Wild Thing for Man.

*confession* but i wasn't paying close attention the description at first and just saw "Leashed" and, for one awesome second, almost fainted at the thought of Fraser in a leash.

hahaha

you gave me naughty thoughts.

Now, I'm generally all in favor of bondage, but I draw the line at Dief/Fraser porn. See that line? Right there? I ain't crossing it.

Move along. Nothing to see. *grins*

Well actually Dief didn't enter the picture in my head...until now. Still, it's good to know there are lines out there that aren't getting crossed. I am reassured by their presence.

That said, I can't stop my sudden realization that Fraser and Dief already argue like a married couple. :P

Hurts so damn good.

angsty but fascinating. That ep was a very painful one.
your fic was a powerful reminder of it...

You know, I pretty much got where Fraser was coming from in that episode. It was horrifying, yet plausible. But I just couldn't get why Diefenbaker was able to forgive him for it. Hence this fic.

You have maybe invented a whole new genre of fic here, with the Dief angst. It was fabulous, of course, and I do love the implications for Fraser.

Can I request some Ray's-turtle angst? C'mon, you know you want to! :-)

*groans* I know, I know, I KNOW! Dief pieces are almost always humorous. Leave it to me to write Dief angst. Just crown me Angst-Queen and give me more characters to torment.

Turtle refuses to say anything but, "Lettuce." If he does so with a tiny quaver of desperate hunger, looking out into the darkened apartment... then he deserves to be eaten by the wolf.

Poor, angsty Dief!

The sequel to this, of course, is Dief and the Woes of Parenthood. Oh, teh longsuffering angst!

*mumbles, blushing* If I go that far, please stage an Intervention.

Eeeeeeeee, that whole episode, poor Dief! Nobody understood, and Fraser was going to have to shoot him. And I didn't think they really would... but I was worried, oh yes.

This captured that tension perfectly. And I love the creative use of caps and italics. :)

God, yes, they really did work the angst hard in that episode, didn't they? The formatting was tricky on this, as was the voice. He just sounded much more feral in my head, and I wasn't quite sure how to convey it.

If you appreciate such things, I tried podficing this one and "Thrill of the Hunt".
