dS Reading Habits Meme

Meme from bluebrocade.

1. Stuff wot'll (almost) always get me to read a fic

Certain favorite authors. Fraser/Kowalski, Dief stories, AUs, plotty fic, case fic, amnesia fic, comedy, magical realism, angst, dark fic including death-fic and post-apocalyptic fic. Phone sex and masturbation. Long long long stories! Certain bullet-proof kinks. Original Characters. Established relationship fic. Well-researched Post-CotW fic set in northern Canada. Vecchio in or recovering from Vegas. Femmeslash. Well-written Bad!Ben.

2. Stuff wot'll (almost) always make me pass on a fic

Certain authors who, for whatever reason, don't butter my muffin. Bad characterization. Multiple spelling mistakes in the first few lines. RayK calling himself Stanley. Incest. Turnbull having sex with anyone. Mpreg and most kid!fic. WIPs. AUs set in a different place and time where every single fricking character makes an appearance. And really, WTF was with the Tentacle!fic?

3. Stuff I be meh about

Crack!fic. Cross-dressing and genderfuck. Threesomes. First-time stories (love 'em, hate 'em, but they seem to be over-represented in the fandom). Cliche!fic, especially ones where the characters are suddenly forced to have sex for (insert convoluted and unlikely reason). Fraser/Vecchio. Ray/Ray.

Actually, I think I stole it myself, either from canon-RayK, or some marvelous author writing RayK. But I view it as part of our intellectual common heritage, soi please do.

I must admit to a certain weariness of first-time stories, but then for me it comes in cycles. Like, I'll want to read every single one I can get my hands on, and then two weeks later I want long established-relationship stories and I can't stand to read another, "Fraser and Ray go back to Ray's apartment, order pizza, and suddenly they're kissing first-time stories." Why are you meh about them? Because they're formulaic? A bit cliche? Enquiring minds want to know!

AUs set in a different place and time where every single fricking character makes an appearance.

Oh dear. I'm a bit guilty of this in some of my WIPs AUs. What is it that you dislike about this? I kind of grin to myself and think of it as an in-joke for fans (not that fanfic itself isn't rife with in-jokes) but I can see how it would be annoying. Maybe.

Some of my favorite stories are first timers, but they are seriously over-represented in due South fic. It's as if the Big Question in the fandom was, "How can we get these two into bed?" And for me ... that's just not the big question.

Random characters showing up in AUs throw off my suspension of disbelief. Part of it's coming from the Highlander fandom. There are some fun AUs there, with Immortals meeting hundreds of years ago, in different times and places. I'd be happily reading a hot story where Methos is a pirate and captures Duncan MacLeod, plausible, fun, when suddenly their Mortal friend Joe would show up. My brain would screech to a halt. Joe won't be born for another hundred years! There were quite a few examples of stories like that, and it BUGGED me. Hence the over-sensitivity. It's not that I think it's bad writing. In-jokes are fun. It just doesn't work for me.
