dS ficlet: Transfers, Tea, and Goldfish

Fandom, Characters: Due South, Fraser, Turnbull
Rating: PG (just a leetle F/K UST for spice)
Length: 400 words
Summary: Sometimes all you need is a second chance...
Challenge: This is an over-grown response to the ds_snippets "tea and sympathy" prompt, and was created in hopes of cheering up slidellra on her very crappy day.
Disclaimer: Alliance/Atlantis owns these characters. I just feed them when they follow me home.
Thanks to: My beta llassah, who read the two drafts and inspired me with brilliant bits of dialogue. I'd also like to thank kill_claudio for the in-depth, cross-cultural discussion of tea kettles.

Diefenbaker stalked off without a word as they entered the Consulate. Fraser allowed himself a sigh as he closed and locked the door behind them. The last few weeks had been difficult, a constant battle against his own desires. And now, now that he had finally arranged an orderly retreat in the face of superior forces … it had become intolerable. He had filled out a transfer request form and placed it on Inspector Thatcher's desk last night. All day long, Fraser had tried to tell Ray.

The words had been on the tip of his tongue as Ray snarled and postured his way through an interrogation, but they shouldn't discuss the matter in front of a suspect. He'd nearly said something when Ray pulled him into a parody of an embrace behind a pallet in the warehouse, but the middle of a firefight hardly seemed the appropriate venue. And just now in the car, as Ray drove him back to the Consulate, the power of speech had abandoned him completely.

As he turned on the lights, a large figure leapt to its feet behind him.

"Oh," Turnbull said brightly, "I must have dozed off."

Fraser wanted nothing more than to crawl into bed, but if Turnbull had waited to make his report in person, there must have been a major disaster.

"There was tea, sir."

Fraser took a deep breath, closing his eyes briefly for patience. "Tea?"

"Yes, sir. All over your transfer request form. You see, the new electric kettle is a marvelous piece of engineering, but it pours just slightly to the left, and …"

"I see. It's perfectly all right, Turnbull. I can fill out another form in the morning."

"Well, that's the other thing," Turnbull continued earnestly. "I seem to have used the remainder of the Consulate's stock of GRC 3958-B forms as fire-starters."

"All of them?"

"The wood's still a bit damp, after last week's, ah…"

"The Fish Tank Incident?"

"Exactly. You'll be glad to hear that the goldfish have made a full recovery. Now, I've ordered replacement forms from Ottawa, and they should arrive within six to eight weeks."

Six to eight weeks? That was … that was wonderful. "Well, in that case," Fraser said, watching Turnbull's suspiciously bland face for any sign of duplicity, "I don't suppose I could treat you to a cup of tea?"

Wonderful! I love stories where Turnbull's bumbling actually disguises a shrewd (if, er ,somewhat unusual) intellect. And I knew only good things could come out of a discussion about tea. Brilliant!

It's hard to say. Could even Turnbull do all that by accident? Maybe. Or maybe there's more going on in there than we realize.

You know how I feel about Turnbull, right? In that I kinda hate him a little? Well...not so much right now. I do like stories in which friends conspire to bring Fraser and Ray together, and this was really well-done. And heh to the Fish Tank Incident. The capitalization on that really tickled my funnybone. Mah-velous job, m'dear!

Heh, glad to have overcome your hostility against the Turnbull. As for the Fish Tank Incident ... Turnbull has this infectious kind of crazy. And don't worry, because the goldfish (*points to your icon*) are just fine!

Oh! Oh, I love the idea that Turnbull may have recognized Fraser's doubts about the transfer before Fraser did, and decided to head him off at the pass, as it were.

That's a pretty darned good friend, letting Fraser go along thinking he's stupid, when all the time he's watching his back. At least that's the way I'm choosing to interpret this, 'cause it makes me happy. :)

The Fish Tank Incident... *snerk*

Friends don't let friends hand in transfer requests. Turnbull's definitely open to interpretation. Thanks for the comment, brigantine1!

Poor Turnbull. It's just too easy to make fun of him. Like shooting goldfish in a fish tank...
