Farscape Snippet: Drifting

Fandom, Characters: Farscape, John Crichton
Length: 238 words
Rating: PG
Disclaimer: The characters and concepts of Farscape belong to the Jim Henson Company.
Notes: This is my first Farscape fic. Thanks to my beta, simplystars.

John's Dad had raised him on stories of heroes. Not knights in shining armor, but pilots. WWI pilots, who saluted each other as they went into combat and fired machine guns through their own props at the enemy. WWII pilots, keeping hope alive during the Blitz as their friends were shot out of the sky. Test pilots and astronauts, carrying the dreams of a nation on their backs. Pilots lived in the air and died by fire.

In the days since he'd first fallen through a wormhole and come out the other side of the Looking Glass, John had often thought he'd go out like that, in a blaze of glory.

Now, with the only sound his own harsh breath and the only sight his steadily decreasing O2 gauge, John realized that he was closer to the old British seamen. The ones who sailed off the edge of the map and never made it home. Drifting through the endless black of space wasn't too different from being carried by wind and wave across the face of the deep. Sailors spent their lives surrounded by water, but refused to learn to swim. They were afraid of those last long minutes after their ship disappeared over the horizon.

Pilot would come back if he could. In the mean time, John had over an hour of air and a vista of unexplored stars. He might as well relax and enjoy the view.

This reminds me of something, but I can't put my finger on what. It has a haunting beauty, light and dark as one.

This was an interesting fandom that I followed in the first couple of years, then faded away from. I'm not sure why--possibly too many characters torqued away from their earlier templates, becoming almost unrecognizable. Maybe I just didn't harbor any Scorpio love *g*.

This snippet hearkens back to the John that I really know and like!

I actually haven't read anything in the Farscape fandom at all. I find Scorpio disturbing - terribly evil and yet almost sympathetic. *shudders*

I'm glad you enjoyed it, Cath!

Semi-sweet. It could be best set in Season Three, post DWTB, I think, because John would be too focused on finding a planet or place to land in S1's JC, and on other occasions, Pilot didn't leave him. It's a nice little scene, John adrift in mind and body. I can easily see Jack telling his son stories of his own heroes. John's faith in Pilot is touching.

Thank you, kernelzda! I think you're right, post-"Dog With Two Bones" is the perfect setting for this.

Lovely metaphors here: exploration and glory and what constitutes a hero, and it feels so very Crichton, as he tries to process this life he's found in familiar terms. Beautiful work!

And I understand from Stars that this is (one of?) your first Farscape fics: welcome to this little corner of the world, and I do hope you'll do more!

Thank you, pellucid! I'm glad you could see Crichton working through things in this way, relating the bizarreness of his new life to whast he learned in childhood, trying to be a hero.

Yes, this is my first Farscape fic. Hopefully not my last. They are such an intriguing set of characters!

This is beautiful. You've caught John and his father perfectly in so few words. And that last paragraph is just quintessential John Crichton.

I'm here by way of simplystars, by the way. :)

Thank you! I was a bit worried that it didn't sound like John. So I'm reassured that the last paragraph, in particular, felt like him.

I feel like I owe simplystars a kick-back for the enthusiastic pimping!

Good John fic for his thoughts and feelings and the link with his father.
Also love the last paragraph, very John.

Thanks Valoki, I'm glad the connection to his father came through.

John is such a wonderfully interesting character - passionate and intense, but capable of being so laid back; you captured that perfectly, I think. Good job!

So true! One minute he's New York, the next he's California. I'm glad this worked for you. Thanks, akamine_chan!
