dS snippet: A Woman of Ambition

Fandom/Characters: Due South; Fraser, Thatcher/OFC
Rating: PG
Length: 300 words
Challenge: Written for ds_snippets challenge #56, prompt: smart, trying, pastel
Notes: Thanks to my beta, llassah. Written for omphale23, who requested femmeslash.
Summary: Fraser has a late-night visitor.

Fraser assumed the person hammering on the Consulate door at 1:47 am was Ray, perhaps too inebriated for his usual credit card trick, so he answered the door in his long johns.

The petite East Indian woman on the step was wearing a pastel green overcoat and a distinct odor of Scotch. Her surprised expression quickly hardened into one of hostility.

"Benton Fraser, I presume," she said in a sarcastic, Cambridge-accented contralto.

"Yes, I'm Constable Benton Fraser. I do apologize for my state of undress. I wasn't – "

"Whatever, pretty boy," she interrupted. "Go and tell Meg that Kirti's here to see her."

Fraser cleared his throat. "Meg? Are you looking for Inspector Thatcher?"

"Does she make you call her that in bed? That's … " her eyes trailed down his body. "That's rather hot, actually."

"If you'd care to return during working hours, you could make an appointment to see the Inspector at that time."

She advanced aggressively. "We were happy, back in Toronto. We had a life together. Then she got this promotion, and long-distance relationships are hard, but we were trying, okay? We were making it work. Until you seduced her."

Fraser found himself stiffening defensively into a pose of attention. "The Inspector and I are not romantically involved."

Kirti blinked at up at him. "But she said … " She pulled a much-folded paper out of her purse and peered at it. "Only, she didn't say, did she? She implied." Kirti laughed, a single bitter chuckle. "Probably trying to let me down easy. That's Meg for you. Smart, ambitious, brilliant at Psych-Ops, and not the first clue how to act in a relationship."

She turned around and sat down abruptly on the step. "Call me a taxi, please, Constable. And for God's sake, don't tell her I was here."

Meg Thatcher really would be hopeless in a arelationship. Just think about the mixed signals she gives off with Fraser!

Wow, k. You make this look so easy.

Poor Fraser, not sure what to do with the obviously deranged woman at the Consulate door...

"Does she make you call her that in bed? That's … " her eyes trailed down his body. "That's rather hot, actually."

In all the wrong ways. Great job, keerawa!

Fraser tries so hard to ignore the inappropriate comments! Can't you imagine Meg being into power games in bed? God knows she's playing all the time out of them, with Fraser. Thanks!

Very cool! Is this a crossover with something I don't know, or an original character?
Mar. 3rd, 2008 12:53 am (UTC)
Oh, she's an original character. A very distinctive and stubborn one, too. Thanks for the comment, Isis!

So cool! I love this. It's such a great bit of backstory, and I really like Kirti, she's intriguing. And great characterization on Thatcher, even though she's not even present.

I'm glad you liked Kirti! SHe's a very pushy muse, for someone created out of nothing for a guest appearance in a snippet. By interacting with a person, you get to see what they are trying to show you. Here, we get a tiny glimpse of what she's like from the inside of a relationship.

Thanks, luzula!

I very nearly wet myself at the notion of Fraser seducing Thatcher.

Excellent piece, K. *smishes it, and you*

*laughs* Well, Kirti hasn't exactly gotten to know Fraser at this point. Glad you enjoyed, hurry_sundown!

"That's rather hot, actually." Indeed.

I really liked this. And I love your original character.

Fraser's so very good at following a superior officer's orders...
Thanks, 2_4_joy!

Hee! Yeah, I can totally see this. Love the visuals on Fraser answering the door in his longjohns (which he would totally do). :)
Mar. 6th, 2008 10:45 pm (UTC)
Thanks, js! Yes, I do believe he would, if he believed it were Ray at teh door.
Mar. 6th, 2008 06:40 am (UTC)
Heh. Sassy!
Mar. 6th, 2008 10:46 pm (UTC)
Kirti is very, very pushy. Which I think Meg would need in a lover, or she'd run rough-shod over him/her.
Mar. 7th, 2008 02:11 am (UTC)
Oooh, intriguing. Me likey. Will we ever get to see Kirti and Meg in Toronto when they were together?
Mar. 8th, 2008 12:15 am (UTC)
Glad you liked it, Vienna! I don't see myself writing that story right now, but we'll see what the Muses come up with. Actualy, Kirti might turn up as a minor character in a case fic. See how that goes.

Interesting slice-of-life backstory for Thatcher -- a sly reveal of Thatcher's calculated easy let-down, and a sympathetic skewering of her weaknesses and occasional need to hide behind Fraser. Very good.
Mar. 19th, 2008 12:08 am (UTC)
Thank you, verushka! The canonical presentation of Meg Thatcher is so inconsistent, it gives you quite a bit of play when it comes to writing her.

*flails at you*

I completely missed this with all the internet issues. But I found it now!

(Is it wrong that the thought of Fraser assuming that it was Ray, and therefore wearing his underwear to answer the door, gives me bad ideas?)

I'm glad you found it! *shares bad ideas with omphale23*
