Fandom Love Letter

For china_shop's Fandom Appreciation Challenge, and because you all deserve it.

I love you Highlander folks here at LJ. I really do. Here's why.

I first encountered Highlander fanfiction about two years ago, when my partner's former lover sent me a link to Rhi's Line War and a recs list. This was the first fanfiction I had ever read, and I devoured it like a starving wolf. I backtracked from those links to directories and down to other stories, hunted up broken links through Google, and even tried open Google searches to find new material. Slash knocked me for a joyous loop. I found more rec lists, challenges long past, and even The Desert Prince. I pounced on Seventh Dimension and read huge amounts.

I sent feedback, but about half of it bounced from defunct emails. Still, I was thrilled whenever I heard back from an author.

Then I noticed something sad. The stories were old. ALL the stories were old. I concluded that I had jumped on the Highlander bandwagon a year or two too late, and that everyone had moved on to bigger and better things. (7th dimension's mod had just stopped updating, but I didn't know that.)

Well, I was gonna try writing something anyway! There just wasn't enough good Joe Dawson fic out there, so I would write one myself. I was lucky enough to have the author of my FAVORITE Dawson story to volunteer to beta my work, when I had no clue how to write. I stuck whole conversations into a single huge paragraph. No, really, I did. And she still read it. *nominates mackiedockie for sainthood*

When the story was finally finished, she suggested I publish it on Yahoo Groups (which still barely has a pulse) and LiveJournal!

And here I find my fandom home, buzzing, creative, tremendously varied, and fun. Do you know how INCREDIBLE it feels to get feedback from people who's work pulled me into writing for the first time in my adult life? The thought-provoking conversation and helpful denizens always cheer me up. And there is a constant flow of new authors and fiction growing around me at all times.

Instead of a preserved flower, my fandom is a living rainforest, and I thank you all for that.

That's a wonderful sentiment! I'm glad I discovered that the fandom was still hopping here on LJ too. I'd just about given up :)

Lovely image-- I suppose we are a hidden jewel in the forest, it's all in knowing where to look! Very glad you've joined us.

I don't think even that closet optimist Joe Dawson would consider using my monicker and sainthood in the same sentence *GGG* Way too scary a thought!

But I share your enjoyment of keeping the HL flame alive, and enjoying the creative flames of fellow HL fanfic writers. The mythos lives...

*coming from hl_flash* I just got back into Highlander fandom this winter, and was wonderfully pleased and surprised to find that it was thriving on LJ. As well as the older stories that I remembered and loved, there were *new* stories by both well-known names and newer authors. ^_^
