dS snippet: "The Wrong Side of the Tracks"

Fandom; Characters: due South; RayK and Fraser
Rating: PG
Word Count: 299
Challenge: Written for the ds_snippets Challenge #103, prompt: railroad
Author's Notes: Unbeta'd. Just needed to get them out of my head.

Fraser sat like a lump in the passenger seat, not saying a word. It’d been a slow week, with him stuck escorting that famous Canadian lady around town. But they made up for it today. Caught the exec’s secretary right in the act, trying to pick up the extortion money. ‘Good, solid, police work,’ Welsh had complimented them.

Fraser hadn’t said a word since. Something was bugging him. So when they reached the Consulate, Ray followed him out of the car and up the steps.

“What’s with you tonight?” Ray asked as Fraser pulled out his key.

Fraser turned around. Ray had to move back or get pushed off the step.

“It seems to me,” Fraser said, fast, precise, and pissed off, “that the Chicago Police Department exists primarily to protect the rights and property of the powerful.”

“Yeah. And?” Ray said, waiting for a point. Because that was obvious. The definition of ‘Major Crimes’ was flexible. Homicide made the cut, no matter who the stiff was. But anything under that, it depended on how connected the victim was. Ray had once been pulled off an assault case to lead the search for some alderman’s sister’s cat.

Fraser’s fighting body language started to slump. And Ray recognized that slump. It was like, when you hit a guy, and you expect him to hit you back, but instead he just walks away, and you know you’re fucked. Ray’s mouth opened, and out came, “Nuh-uh.”

“Pardon?” Fraser said, looking confused.

“I mean,” Ray said, scrambling for something better, “not always. Look – let’s grab some dinner at Manny’s, then check out that liquor store across the tracks, see if we can get a lead on the guy who’s been rolling winos.”

“I … yes.” Fraser said softly, looking down. “Thank you, Ray.”

I love how Ray thinks this is an obvious fact of life. Not something he likes, but not news. And how it hits Fraser hard, even though it's something that should be obvious to him, too.

Great description of Fraser's speech as fast, precise and pissed-off. Also, the end really gets to me--Ray not wanting Fraser to lose that belief in Justice. They really bring out the best in each other here. Oh, Ray. And oh, Fraser, too.

Poor Fraser thinks he's being offensive. After the week he's had, ferrying some rich and famous Candian lady around Chicago, he's just looking for someone to tell him he's wrong, they are making a difference. Thanks, luzula!

Aww, I love how Ray gets Fraser, here, and knows exactly what he needs. And maybe in the long run it's what Ray needs, too. :)

Oh, this is awesome. So exactly right: both Fraser's reaction and Ray's response. I could see it so clearly.

Poor Fraser, needs Ray to lift him up here. And Ray needs Fraser to remember why it matters.
