Fandom: Supernatural
Characters: Future!Dean, Future!Castiel
Rating: PG
Author's Notes: Written for the Sam and Dean Drabble-a-thon, prompt: Future!Dean, cell phone. Thanks to elementalv and Steven for the beta.
Spoilers: Spoilers for 5x04.
Length: 100 words
Disclaimer: These characters belong to Kripke.

We’re all a little nuts. Survivor’s guilt and PTSD. Bed wetters, cutters, and binge drinkers. Blank stares, night terrors, little voices in your head – nobody cares so long as you can shoot a rifle and do your share of the chores.

But Cas’ cell phone thing freaks everybody out. On bad days he pulls out his broken old phone and dials random numbers. Face blank and urgent, almost like the old days, he corners people and makes them listen to the dead air.

“I’m trying to reach my Father,” Cas says. “Is He there?”

“No, Cas, he’s still not answering.”

*swallows the lump in her throat* Oh, gosh. This. I love it. And it's devastating.

The worst part, to my mind, is Cas making other people listen to the phone because he's convinced God doesn't want to speak to him. Thanks so much, not_refined.

Whoa. What a great idea.

*sniff* Poor Cas. It must have be his only way to cope with everything that happened. I just want to give him a hug here.

Oh, me too. Thanks, mystic_majestic!

So simple and yet so utterly devestating...brilliant job. It's hard not to just quote the whole thing, but I was struck dumb by this line:
Face blank and urgent, almost like the old days, he corners people and makes them listen to the dead air.

Ouch, oh, so very ouch.

Cas raised Dean from Perdition. He believes it was his job to prevent this. And he failed. That's a lot of pain and guilt. On good days, booze and orgies take the edge off. On bad days ... no.

Thanks for the feedback, mikes_grrl!

Wow,this is surprisingly powerful. I...I want to hug Cas, I want to kick that irresponsible daddy's ass, and I want to cry. Which one should I do first? ;_;, it's so painful.

It is! Ugh, poor Cas' father reminds me of parents who leave their little ones alone while they run off to enjoy a weekend in Vegas. Thanks for the feedback, drowningcass.

simple, yet incredibly painful.

Woah. I just...ouch. So simple, yet powerful.

Thanks, another_lily. 'The End' had such a bleak view of the future.
Nov. 12th, 2009 10:06 am (UTC)
I pout to myself... So sad! Lovely.

That broke me. Oh Cas! *hugs*
Nov. 15th, 2009 11:28 pm (UTC)
*hugs him, too* So much despair, underneath it all, in 'The End.'
Nov. 16th, 2009 09:51 pm (UTC)
Poor Cas, what a terribly sad (and not to mention creepy) moment that is nonetheless v. believable.
Nov. 16th, 2009 10:38 pm (UTC)
*nods* All of them a bit broken, in that future.

THank you for the feedback, searingidolatry!
Nov. 19th, 2009 05:03 pm (UTC)
Ooooh! This is wonderfully twisted. Great job!

Thanks so much, twasdark. Having an incredibly crummy day (though not by apocalyptic standards), and positive feedback helps.
