Yuletide 2009 Request Letter

Dear Yuletide Writer -

My four requested fandoms are Jacqueline Carey's 'Kushiel's Legacy' series, Jim Butcher's 'Dresden Files' series, Burn Notice, and Sons of Anarchy. Writing a 'Kushiel's Legacy' story without any sex would be a crying shame, but other than that, I'm perfectly happy with gen, slash, het, or femme-slash.

ETA: Now with the text of my requests, since it seems people troll letters for writing prompts!

This is my first time participating in Yuletide, and I am so excited.

Jacqueline Carey - The Kushiels Legacy series (Phedre no Delaunay)

I love this series for the hot, consensual BDSM, the intriguing religion the author's created, and Phedre, who can be strong, intelligent, and save the world as a masochistic submissive. Story ideas - anything, so long as it's not gen. I could enjoy an outsider POV, from Anafiel or Waldemar Selig, about Phedre. Phedre/Imriel would be incredibly hot, in that bad/wrong/want kind of way. (If you can keep it in character. And, yes, it should and WOULD be problematically incestuous.) Phedre fantasizing about Joscelin doing something he never would. Any kink you want to bring to the table. Absolutely anything. It all works for Phedre, it all works for me. Phedre's night in public as Melisande's pet was incredibly hot - you could do something with that. Or a visit to one of the Houses, for some purpose. Just make it hot, and I'll eat it up.

Burn Notice (Fiona Glenanne/Michael Westen)

I love this show because of the narrative voice over, Michael's unusual (Asperger's perhaps?) nature, and the way that our main characters are white hats through conscious choice rather than by default. Also, Michael/Fiona is one of the hottest het pairings on TV. Man, I would love to read something about how Michael and Fiona first met. I get the feeling the man she fell in love with is NOT the one we see in Miami. Or Fiona doing something dark she knows Michael wouldn’t approve of, to keep him safe. Or maybe something showing us Michael the juvenile delinquent teenager, with seeds of the man he will become.

Sons of Anarchy (Any Character. Seriously.)

I love this fandom because the men are pretty, the women are strong, and they’re all one big, sometimes happy, often dysfunctional family. They have a code, even if it doesn't match conventional morality. Here’s a few story ideas. Jax in high school, getting into trouble with Tara. (That arrest record of hers has some nice prompts!) Or Jax’s father, right at the moment when he realizes it’s all gone wrong. Something with Gemma and Clay, showing that wonderful, mature, honest and loving relationship they have with each other. Or something set in prison? An AU where a different choice leads to a very different reality would be cool. Or you could write me a crossover with Supernatural. I think those two shows would go together like peanut butter and chocolate. Jax/Dean would be scorching hot, or a gen casefic set in Charming. That would be awesome!

Jim Butcher - The Dresden Files (Harry Dresden)

I love the noir tone of these books, and the way Harry is a Big Damn Hero, saving people for starvation level wages, while at the same time straddling the line of going seriously dark side. I love the mythology of it, vampires of all flavors and weres, angry spirits, evil sorcerers, and Knights of the Cross. (And why the Hell has Harry got those 2 swords?) You could write me something funny with Bob, or something really seriously dark with Harry. You could spin me a gen casefic and I'd probably quiver with joy. I also adore Karrin Murphy. Something from her POV could be fun, or involving those cute RPG-playing weres.

I'm thrilled about all four of my requested fandoms. I threw some story ideas your way, but feel free to ignore them if they don't catch your interest. I'm sure I'll love whatever you write. Here are a few general ideas about my many likes and few dislikes.

I'm a fan of plotty stories. I like it when interesting things happen, characters need to do something or figure something out. Even in a story where the sex or relationship is the main focus, I love having some kind of additional conflict, mystery or action going on, something that shows these characters have lives and outside interests. Characters being smart and competent really please me.

I like angst and darkfic, up to and including deathfic. Now, don't feel that you have to go there - I like light, happy stories too! But if your Muse leads you somewhere dark, I'm delighted to go there with you. I like it when a character's dark side and flaws are intimately related to their best qualities. It's not that I enjoy the exploration of evil, per say. More that I'm fascinated by the search for love and redemption in even the darkest of circumstances.

Unreliable narrators are a particular thrill for me. I like Original Characters and outsider POVs, so feel free. I'm always interested in stories that reveal character backstory. I love stories about people who know and trust each other working together as a team. One of my requests mentioned AU's, but you could write one for any of my fandoms. I really enjoy AUs, especially the 'alternate timeline' or 'hinge-point' variety, where a single different decision veers reality away from canon.

I'm not into crack!fic, including tentacles, wings, and transformation fic. I don't like kid fic. Plots that depend on characters acting like idiots irritate me. Pure romantic schmoop with no conflict or other plot doesn't generally work for me. I'm not a fan of 'These characters are now pirates in the 1700's!' variety of AU. RPF freaks me out.

Hot Sex
I read and enjoy lots of G-PG fic. But if you should be in the mood to write something porny, yay! I like slash, het, and femme-slash. I'm a fan of intense relationships. People who love each other beyond all reason. Even if you're writing about a hook-up or business transaction, I want it to be in response to some deep need, not just a casual fling. Kink works for me, if you want to go there. You don't have to - one of the hottest stories I ever read never went past a purely vanilla first base. Passionate, nervous first-time kissing. Mmmmm.

My favorite kinks include dirty talk, voyeurism, masturbation, pain, bloodplay, marking, bondage, orgasm denial, and power-imbalances. *licks lips* Most importantly, though, it needs to be in-character, be about these two (or three) people, what they want and need. Kinks are all about trust. It doesn't need to be safe or sane, but I want it consensual. The particular flavor of dubcon wherein a character is forced into something they desperately want, but could never reach out and take on their own sets me off like a fire-cracker.

I'm not into fisting, golden showers, cbt, scat-play, clothing-fetishes, DS as a lifestyle, necrophilia, bestiality, or role-playing. But you could probably make me buy into any one of them, if you write it hard and hot enough. The one thing that seriously turns me off is fic where the character's kink is because of some childhood trauma, sexual assault, or anything icky like that.

In Conclusion
To me, fanfic is all about getting a chance to explore characters in ways that the original source didn't allow. I love these characters, these worlds - show me something I didn't know about them, and that's the best present you can give me.

Your Eager Recipient,

- keerawa

P.S. I'll be out of town from December 24-30. I probably won't have any access to the Internet, so I won't get a chance to read and respond to the story you've written until the 31st.

But what fandoms did you request? *G*

I wasn't quite sure if I was allowed to reveal that, but since the yuletide fairy's asked so nicely:

Burn Notice
Sons of Anarchy
Jacqueline Carey - The Kushiel's Legacy series
Jim Butcher - The Dresden Files

Two on-going TV shows, two book series, nothing terribly obscure.
