SPN Vid: 'Apocalypse Drunk'

Fandom, Characters: Supernatural, Sam and Dean Winchester
Song: 'Hurricane Drunk', by Florence and the Machines
Length: 3:13
Spoilers: Season 4 and 5, up to 5x10.
Thanks to: My betas, amonitrate and Steven.
Disclaimer: Sam, Dean, and Supernatural belong to Kripke and the CW, not to me.
Feedback: Pretty please? I'd love some, including concrit. If public concrit makes you uncomfortable, email me at keerawa@yahoo.com.
Summary: And you can't save me now.
Author's Notes: This is my own commentary on where the season 4-5 arc has left the Winchesters. I've been listening to the album 'Lungs' for months, idly thinking I could vid half the songs to Supernatural, when I read amonitrate's post about the roles that first (Hero) and second (Scapegoat) children play in dysfunctional families, and how that affects her reading of Sam and Dean. It threw this vidding idea into sharp focus for me, and I powered from first clip to first draft in under twelve hours. Thanks again for the inspiration, amonitrate!

Lyrics

Please note that these are the lyrics I hear for this song. Having looked them up in a few places, I suspect I was off in a few places from the actual lyrics for the song - but these are lyrics I vidded to!

No walls
can keep me protected
No sleep
Nothing in between me and the rain
And you can't save now
I'm in the grip of a hurricane
I'm gonna blow myself away

I'm going on.
I'm gonna drink myself to death
And in the crowd
I see you with someone else
I brace myself
'Cause I know it's going to hurt
But at least I like to think
it can't get any worse

No home
I don't want shelter
No calm
Nothing to keep me from the storm
And you can't hold me down
'Cause I belong to the hurricane
It's gonna blow this all away

I'm going on
I'm gonna drink myself to death
And in the crowd
I see you with someone else
I brace myself
'Cause I know it's gonna hurt
But at least I like to think it can't get any worse

I hope that you see me
'Cause I'm staring at you
And the way that you look over
you look right through
Then you lean and
kiss me on the head
And I never felt so alive
and so ... dead

I'm going on
I'm gonna drink myself to death
And in the crowd
I see you with someone else
I brace myself
'Cause I know it's gonna hurt
I'm going on

I'm going on
I'm gonna drink myself to death
And in the crowd
I see you with someone else
I brace myself
'Cause I know it's gonna hurt
I'm going on

I'm going on
I'm going on
I'm going on
I'm going on
I'm going on
I'm going on

Ha! I never would've thought to apply that song to this show, but it *works*. I especially like what you did with all the "seeing you with someone else" bits; oh, the Winchesters and their catastrophic codependency. *g*

Apocalyptic codependency? Still, I'm convinced it's the strength of the brothers' relationship that'll save the world. Now we just have to see if Kripke agrees. Thanks, serrico!

I'm so honored to have inspired a vid! And it was fun to try my hand at betaing. I still adore that little pause at :50. And I love that song to pieces.

I like this a lot--the song works very well for the screwed-up Winchester boys. :)

They are well and truly screwed-up, aren't they? Thanks, embroiderama!

I love Supernatural and Florence + The Machine, but I never thought of putting the two together. They go together really well, great song choice there! :) I loved reading the meta that inspired this vid, it gave it a whole new depth and context. The way you used the repeating "with someone else" was definitely one of my favorite parts, though I also really loved your use of the lines: "cause i belong to the hurricane / it's gonna blow this all away". Great job!

I wasn't kidding about being able to vid half the songs on that album for SPN. Now I just have to pick which one to work on next. Mary/John or Ruby/Sam. Hmmm, choices choices.

This isn't necessarily a Sam/Dean vid, but it's certainly a break-up song, which fits nicely with the way the angels and demons have been trying to pull the brothers apart over the past two seasons. Poor Sam is far too willing to buy into his 'destiny'.

Thank you for the feedback, tehlime!

That was so nicely done. I love how you blended S4 and S5 Sam'n'Dean here.

This vid was absolutely amazing, and probably the best recap of season 4 until now I've seen.

Thanks so much, not_sally! I've seen so many fabulous season 4 vids, that's one hell of a compliment.

It's kind of interesting that at the beginning the visuals seem harsher than the song. But they both end up being pretty harsh. I do feel for the two characters. Dean thinking that things can't get any worse when he's lying bleeding on the floor... and then things get worse... ouch. And Sam and Lucifer... Sam belongs to the hurricane, obviously. It's too bad.

The song does sound quite mellow at first. and then things get worse Yes they certainly do! Sam ... believes the worst of himself at that point. Thank you for the comment, snake_easing!

I like how this looks at how broken, and yet not broken, they are, how their connection to each other is their salvation and their point of vulnerability. This was really well-balanced with the pov's and how harsh S4 was on both, and they're still under siege in S5.

That's exactly what I was trying to say in this vid - thank you dotfic!

Thanks so much! The parallels between Dean and Sam were a lot of fun to play with.
